Butteri are Italian herdsmen, comparable to the Argentinian Gauchos or the Camargue’s Guardians. We could describe the Butteri as a riding shepherd, but it would be inadequate, considering the important role they have played throughout history
Historically the craft originated in Maremma (Lazio). It has been kept alive at La Forra for generations, in the higher geographic location: the Valdarno (Tuscany).
Vita da Butteri is a project run by experts whose aim is to show how the horses are not only a strong passion, or for sport, but are real companions in the daily activity with the free roaming cattle.
This is what La Forra develops with skill and life-long dedication: The daily work with the Maremma livestock continues to respect and honour traditional spirit, technique and rhythms.
Training
Share the Buttero’s life while riding your own or one of the Farm’s horses. You’ll be guided by the Master Silver Massarenti in order to measure and push your limits forward, experiencing how the feeling you will establish with your horse can be projected into the experience of the daily work of a Buttero.
Depending on the season, we will herd and single out cattle for branding or other veterinary interventions, vaccinate, move the cattle and the Farm’s foals.
All of this requires technique and experience; this is why a group of Butteri along with Silver Massarenti will be guiding you, offering their skills to make the best out of this authentic experience.
